EA Closes BioWare and Ends Early Development of the Next Mass Effect
Electronic Arts has confirmed that it is closing BioWare and its Edmonton workspace, bringing an end to one of role-playing games’ most influential studios and halting early development of the next Mass Effect.
The decision was disclosed in an EA employee announcement dated 21 October 2026. EA said a small BioWare team had been working on the project, but that the company had decided not to continue development as it concentrates investment on fewer, larger opportunities.
What EA actually confirmed
EA’s statement is unusually direct: BioWare will close, the Edmonton workspace will close and the early-stage Mass Effect project will not move forward. The announcement does not give a release window, platforms or plot details for that cancelled development, and fans should be cautious about claims that go beyond the official wording.
EA described BioWare as a “legendary studio” that helped define the role-playing genre. Across more than three decades, its catalogue included Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
EA’s new priorities
The wider restructure affects several parts of the publisher. EA says Respawn and DICE will collaborate on a future shooter project, while investment continues in Apex Legends. The company also reaffirmed two action-adventure launches—Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
Elsewhere, EA Sports has a social-first American-football project called “Project Gridiron” in development and has put a new Fight Night into pre-production. Development on The Sims project “Lotus” is being paused so resources can focus on “Project Evergreen”.
A major chapter in RPG history closes
For collectors and convention-goers, BioWare’s closure will deepen interest in the studio’s physical legacy: original game editions, strategy guides, art books, statues, soundtrack releases and licensed memorabilia. That does not automatically make every BioWare item valuable; condition, completeness, provenance and genuine scarcity remain the things to check.
