Maya Hawke Joins Legendary’s Live-Action Magic: The Gathering Film

Maya Hawke has been cast in Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment’s live-action Magic: The Gathering film. Her character has not yet been revealed.

Who is making the Magic film?

BlackBerry filmmaker Matt Johnson is attached to direct and co-write the film with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. The project forms part of Legendary and Hasbro’s wider plan for a connected live-action film and television universe based on the trading-card franchise.

Hawke is best known to genre audiences as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things. Her film credits also include Inside Out 2, Asteroid City, Do Revenge and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Why Magic has so much screen potential

Since launching in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has built an enormous multiverse of planes, Planeswalkers, rival factions and long-running story arcs. That gives the filmmakers plenty of material—but it also means the first film will need a clear entry point for viewers who have never built a deck.

Hasbro says Magic now reaches more than 50 million fans and has expanded across tabletop and digital games, novels, events and crossover sets. The company has not yet confirmed Hawke’s role, a release date, the story’s setting or which characters will appear.

What happens next?

Casting Hawke is the clearest sign yet that the project is moving forward, but collectors should treat any supposed plot details circulating online as speculation until Legendary or Hasbro confirms them.
