How Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Rebuilds Lara Croft for Her 30th Anniversary

Thirty years after Lara Croft first appeared as a few hundred polygons, Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have explained how they are rebuilding the character for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

The developers’ 22 October design deep dive describes a balancing act: increase realism dramatically without losing the silhouette, attitude and sense of discovery that made the 1996 original instantly recognisable.

The original design remains the anchor

Character artist Brendon Bengston says every modern choice is checked against Lara’s original design. Technology now allows the team to build individual hair cards, nuanced skin materials and bespoke facial blend shapes, but the goal is not simply to add detail. It is to make the new model feel unmistakably like Lara.

Narrative director John Stafford divides the approach into three areas. Lara’s intelligence, fearlessness and thrill-seeking spirit are retained; her emotional depth and relationships are expanded; and the different tones of the franchise’s classic, Legend and Survivor eras are brought together.

Real clothes became digital clothes

One of the most interesting production details is the costume pipeline. The team created a life-size 3D print of Lara’s base body, dressed it in real clothing and scanned the results so fabric would fold convincingly. For one outfit, a tailor made a physical version specifically for scanning.

That process gives denim, cotton and other materials distinct behaviour instead of treating every costume as the same digital surface. It is a modern technique serving a deliberately nostalgic goal: a Lara who feels current while still carrying the visual language of 1996.

Release details

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for 12 February 2027 on PlayStation 5, with PS5 Pro enhancements confirmed. PlayStation lists offline single-player play, DualSense features and 3D audio. Pre-orders are open, but buyers should compare editions and regional retailer terms before committing.

The timing makes the redesign more than a technical showcase. It is also a 30th-anniversary statement about which parts of Lara Croft have endured—and which can evolve.
