Girls Is Returning to HBO for Five Episodes — Here’s Who Is Coming Back
HBO has confirmed that Girls will return for a limited run of five episodes, with production scheduled to begin in 2027—ten years after the original series finale.
Creator, writer, director and star Lena Dunham will reprise the role of Hannah Horvath. HBO’s announced returning cast also includes Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
What HBO has confirmed
Judd Apatow returns as executive producer alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells are also attached as co-executive producers.
The original comedy ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017 and received 19 Emmy nominations, winning two. HBO says the new story will revisit the characters as they approach a very different stage of life from the twenty-something turmoil of the original run.
What has not been announced
HBO has not yet provided a premiere date, episode titles or a full supporting cast list. Adam Driver was not named in the initial announcement, so fans should not assume his return unless HBO confirms it separately.
Production beginning in 2027 also means the episodes are not necessarily arriving during 2027. Filming, post-production and HBO’s eventual schedule will determine the release window.
A continuation, not a full reboot
The five-episode format points to a focused continuation rather than a complete restart. The confirmed cast and creative leadership connect it directly to the six-season series, while the decade-long gap gives the characters’ present-day lives room to become the story.
