Mattel Brick Shop Shrinks Hot Wheels Builds to 1:64 Scale with New Racer Series

Mattel is bringing its Brick Shop treatment to the classic 1:64 Hot Wheels scale. The new Hot Wheels Racer Series launches with 20 buildable vehicles and a suggested US retail price of $4.99 each.

Brick-built cars at die-cast scale

Announced on 4 November, the Racer Series is designed as a smaller, more accessible entry point to Mattel Brick Shop. Each car uses a metal base plate, functional metal axles, rolling wheels, rubber-like tyres and custom pieces shaped for the individual vehicle.

Mattel says smooth resin bricks and step-by-step instructions are intended to make the builds approachable for ages six and over. The crucial collector hook is the scale: these builds are intended to sit alongside the 1:64 format that has defined Hot Wheels for decades.

First cars in the collection

Mattel’s announcement names a 24 Camaro ZL1, 18 Audi TT RS, Maserati MCPura, 91 Acura NSX, 99 Honda S2000 and the Hot Wheels Bone Shaker among the first revealed models. Piece counts for those examples range from 27 to 29.

The full Series 1 collection contains 20 vehicles. That low price and compact format could make them attractive both as pocket-money builds and as display companions to existing die-cast collections. UK price and exact retail availability were not confirmed in the announcement, so collectors should wait for local listings rather than assuming a straight currency conversion.

A new collector format

Ted Wu, Mattel’s global head of vehicles and building sets, said the company wanted to translate its Brick Shop approach to the traditional Hot Wheels scale without losing authentic detail or craftsmanship. The metal base plate is a particularly smart bridge between a construction set and a recognisable Hot Wheels object.
