Matchbox The Movie Is Now Streaming: John Cena Leads Apple’s Toy-to-Screen Adventure

Matchbox The Movie is now streaming globally on Apple TV, bringing Mattel’s famous die-cast toy brand to the screen in a live-action adventure starring John Cena.

The film premiered on Friday 9 October 2026 after Apple unveiled its trailer at San Diego Comic-Con. Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA agent whose return to his home town pulls a group of childhood friends into an international pursuit.

Who made Matchbox The Movie?

The film is directed and executive produced by Sam Hargrave, whose action credentials make the project a notable step beyond a simple toy-commercial adaptation. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay. The ensemble includes Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro.

Matchbox The Movie comes from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media and Mattel Studios. Producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Robbie Brenner, Ynon Kreiz and Jules Daly, with Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin serving as executive producers.

Why collectors will be watching

Screen adaptations can renew interest in the original brand, but collectors should resist treating every old Matchbox car as a sudden rarity. Value still turns on the exact casting, production era, colour, wheels, packaging and condition. A childhood loose car and a carded variation may share a name while sitting in very different parts of the market.

If the film sends you back to a collection, start by photographing base markings and packaging. Matchbox base stamps can help identify casting and country of manufacture, but the copyright year is not always the year that a particular example reached shops. Compare like-for-like sold listings and note restorations or replacement boxes.

The film also offers a useful entry point for families: watch first, then identify the vehicles and track down affordable examples rather than chasing speculative “movie hype” listings.
